Righteous Hunger by Alyssa Findlay
It’s the same each time. Vertebrae pop as his skin splits, sprouts fur like lawn daisies. His fingers curl into claws, harpoon the dirt. His gums water when he catches the scent of a rabbit’s blood.
Rabbits are an invasive species, he always reminds himself. They destroy native flora. When reason wanes and instinct reigns supreme, he becomes a public servant.
The next morning, when his mind returns, when his teeth are blunt, he’ll take painkillers and bury what’s left of the creature.
But in the night, he can ignore the warm blood as he feasts upon a trespasser.
