One night at the store by Keith Nunes

I worked in Harlow’s Sports Store on Friday nights.

Abigail, a girl from my school, would walk by with a girlfriend and wave at me.

One night, when I was on my own, Abigail came in and we kissed in the gun section.

“Practise more,” she said, giggling.

She tasted of rum, she wobbled, ran her hand over the guns.

Abigail insisted I show her how to load a .22, and how to position it against her shoulder.

She aimed at her girlfriend and the girl ran for the door screaming.

Abigail laughed.

Keith Nunes (Aotearoa/New Zealand) has had poetry, fiction, haiku and visuals published around the globe. He creates ethereal manifestations because he's inept at anything practical or useful.
